I hope I am posting this on the proper thread, but here it is.
This shooting happened in my little mountain town of 1600 people. I do not know any of the players, but the media has gotten them mixed up. At the scene were
The shooters estranged wife (shot and injured)
The estranged wifes boyfriend
The boyfriends 18 yr old son (shot dead)
The boyfriends daughter
The estranged wifes son
The shooter
Please read the details and comment, much controversy up here about who is at fault. I blame the "victims" for pure stupidity.
Also you can read the comments by family memebers of the "victims" at the end of the article.
Very sad someone had to lose their life in this completely avoidable situation.
A smart estranged wife (knowing there's weapons in her estranged husbands house), should never have allowed any of the people involved to go over at 2am to break in and retrieve items she felt belonged to her. She should have gone through the correct channels to retrieve what items she thought belonged to her and you do so by calling the sheriff's department and having them escort you onto the property where you can retrieve your items in the proper manner.
Very sad that the father of this deceased boy allowed for his son to be involved in this matter as well. Not a very good parenting example.
RIP to the young man and prayers also to the man who now gets to live the rest of his life living with the fact that he killed someone (albeit in self defense).
This is a very tragic situation that could have been avoided if common sense had been used. It's strange that the estranged wife and her accomplices were out there at 2:00 AM, and I hope the investigation reveals more information.
The one thing I should mention is, if you're going to use a firearm in a possible self-defense situation, you have to know what and WHO you're shooting at, and what's beyond your target to make sure your bullets are not going to strike an unintended target.

Well, I don't know about your last paragraph. He heard more than one car pull up and several voices outside (don't remember if this is in the article, but that word came from a retired sherrif that was familiar with the situation). Then people are outside your house taking the screens off your windows and roaming around your exterior with flashlights. First off, you are alone and you know there are more than a couple people trying to get into your house. It is possible that by the time you "identify" those that are breaking in, they could shoot you first. I'd be scared chitless in this situation, like some nightmare coming to life. I think I would have shot first and asked questions later, it may very well be my life at stake.
Just curious, how long should he have waited? How should he have gone about identifying this guy?
