People knew of this way before religion was invented.

Straying a bit from tarot, but we can really only speculate that humans knew this innately. However, prior to the organized religions we have today, ancient man still had a form of religion. Typically animistic in nature and they still had the shaman that they sought out for spiritual guidance and wisdom.

Sure - when I think of religion I am specifically thinking about organised religions which survived and prospered and are extremely populated.

When I speak of people knowing of their spiritual connections way before the advent of organised religions I am speaking about tribalism and also the innateness of spiritual awareness enough to derive the ability to create myths from those understandings in relation to the physical experience.

There are plenty of pre religious beliefs regarding afterlife, and any culture which has been able to conceptualize an afterlife is by nature 'spirituality activated', [to the degree of experience and understanding] even be that their perceptions in regards to the conceptualizing were less formalized than organised religions of today.

Also we needn't say we speculate in regards to human experiences - still been had in the modern day of now...it is very likely such experiences have always been with human beings because we are spiritual beings having a physical experience. So even at that time when we were too animal-like to appreciate it, we nonetheless are spiritual entity having experiences.
Of course this also signifies that all other animals are spiritual entity having experiences.

But yes indeed, what you are speaking of and what organised religion is today, are intricately connected through a series of transformations aligned with the evolution of human consciousness and experience here on Earth.

Here is a small chart I created to help visualize that evolution...

And no, it is not at all off the subject of Tarot and The Fool.

One of my hobbies since retiring is browsing 2nd-hand and antique shops for curios and oddments and bits of art and this n' that.

Anyway, I was doing so today and came upon (and bought) two new-to-me decks. One is the Haindl Tarot. The cards are in German and the artwork quite stunning. It borrows from the Kabbalah, I Ching, Native American lore and others. It came with a fully-illustrated handbook that (thankfully) translates the cards into English.

The other deck was still in its original wrapping and I've yet to pore through it. It's called The Mythic Tarot. Looking forward to exploring it.

Wondered if Owl or Cat or anybody had any familiarity with either deck.

I have re-read this thread again. Sometimes, I need to go back over things to see what I have missed. It is all so much to absorb, coming from someone-me-who does not even play cards.
