You don't need to understand elementals or modes or anything like that, and astrology is a visual art, so it's kind of hard to ply craft when there's no chart to see.
And, contrary to what you might think, you don't actually interpret a chart, rather you interpret the houses in the chart, by examining the planets that rule them, the relationship of those planets to the house, and the relationship of those planets to other planets, or to chart points, which I might remind you have no substance or energy and do not reflect light.
For example, if Jupiter rules your 2nd House, then you'll want to see if Jupiter can see the 2nd House, and in order for Jupiter to see the 2nd House, it must be in the 2nd House or sextile, square, trine or in opposition to the 2nd House.
If Jupiter cannot see the 2nd House, then it is effectively operating blind, and there are implications for that.
