Lived in Ohio, California, Maryland, and Colorado, and graduation parties were popular in all locations.

Tons of them here in NJ. On my block alone there are/were 5 of them.

They are very common here, though by no means do all graduates have them. That's a good thing, because we could not have afforded the graduation gifts to all my kid's friends if they had all had parties. I did ask my kids if they had any desire to have some kind of small celebration, but they weren't interested.

Here is another question for those who say it is common. Are gifts customary and if so, are they usually money or something else?

Money is pretty typical here....Whether they are going off to further their education or moving out, it is a pretty expensive time....I usually tuck a check or giftcard in a copy of Dr. Seuss's Oh! The Places You'll Go!

I just held a graduation party yesterday! Friends and family came. Just an old-school cookout. Everyone had a blast. It's common here, ds went to three others before his, last week.

Family tends to give money. Kids to kids (attending each other's parties), it's not customary for them.

Only SOME kids have big grad parties, and those are the ones many kids go to. Imagine if every graduating Sr did that....there would not be enough time in the world to attend them. Neither of mine had one, although they went to a couple parties that others had. We just went out to dinner with family and a couple friends.

I am originally from MI and now live in IN. There are several teens in my sub and all of them had big graduation parties. I would say they are bigger here than any I have seen in MI. People around here love their BQ so they rent those big BQ grills that are on trailers. Then they rent the big circus tents.

In fact, I just got back from a grad party two weeks ago and have another invite on July 3rd.

Maybe your neighbor is just anti-social?

Sounds like a great time!

Nah she's not, she said her relatives in Ohio don't have the big graduation parties like we do here. But I've had a couple folks from Ohio respond and by george they like to party too! It could be the relatives are antisocial tho.

Or....some people are just not "party people" you know...? We enjoy having a bunch of friends over but one of my closest friends would rather have teeth pulled than host a large party....they celebrated their sons' graduations with a family BBQ....to each their own!
