My son told me something very strange yesterday and I'm not even sure whether to believe it. He is in 4th grade and my husband was discussing school with him and explaining how important it was for him to pay attention in class.

Well, my son tells us that if the teacher catches them not paying attention while she is teaching that they have a choice; either they get extra spelling homework that night, or they have to give the teacher a snack from their lunch boxes! He said they have to get up, go to their lunch box, get a snack and give it to the teacher.

He told us lots of kids have given the teacher a snack because nobody wants to get extra spelling homework, and that so far he has been lucky because he hasn't been caught not paying attention. (AKA, many times he doesn't pay attention, he just hasn't been caught yet.)

Honestly, I can't imagine a teacher doing this, so either this teacher is a real loonytoon, or my son has a wild imagination!

that doesnt sound too made up to me...i bet its true and the teacher will get into a LOT of trouble. i know of a local HS teacher who bet his students they could never ace this particular test. one of the kids took the bet and the kid was instructed that if he lost, he would need to go to the local coffee shop and get the teacher's drink of choice and bring it to him. well the mother was spitting nails when she had to go by the coffee shop the next morning, pay for the coffee and contend with the fact that a teacher was betting with students and that her son took a bet.

I don't think it's right to ever take a kid's food away as a form of punishment or discipline.

Don't worry. This will all be resolved as the Federal Government extends its long arms out to enact its healthy eating laws; only Tofu and such will be allowed in kids snacks and the teachers won't want them.

In the meantime, if its a battle you want to take on, go talk to the teacher, who probably hasn't given it that much thought and will find a new approach if its brought up. Good luck.

I think it is unlikely that your son is making this up. I would confirm with one of his classmates/ classmate's parents, if possible, and take it to the Principal. I think this is a very inappropriate policy since essentially it is denying the kid food as punishment.

Why is it all these parents assume their kids always tell the truth? Kids have very active imagination so i can believe a child stretching the truth to make a story more interesting.

The difference there is no student was required to take the bet.

Sounds like your son has an active imagination.
I'd ask other parents or heck, I'd go and ask the teacher point blank. But that's just me.

Not to say it didn't happen but you may want to question more people on it.

Years ago my son came home from school and was in a bad mood. I asked him what was wrong and he tole me that he got in trouble in class that day.

I asked was he punished and he said yes. I asked what type of punishment he received and he said that teacher locked him in the closet.

I was pissed to say the least and I called the school and told them that I wanted to talk to the teacher right away.

It was a Friday on a holiday weekend and they told me that the teacher was halfway to Florida. I told them that I could either talk to the teacher that day or I was going to issue a warrant for the teachers arrest.

They were able to contact her on her cell and she returned to school about two hours later.

We met with the teacher and the Principal and I asked her was my son in trouble that day and she said yes. Before she could finish I tore into her about her punishing my son.

I told her I was going to have her arrested for locking my son in a closet.

About this time the teacher looked at me like what are you talking about. She says, I never locked you son in a closet. I took away his rubber ducky and locked that in the closet. I liked to died on the spot.

My son could not distinguish the difference between him or his ducky so when ducky was locked in the closet, he was locked in the closet.

I've learned after that to find the truth when dealing with kids before taken action.
