they do. I've known a few to get chicken pox (especially babies before they get the vaccine). I also knew a kid who got mumps last year even though he was vaccinated. My son had an immune deficiency, and was susceptible to whooping cough even though he was vaccinated.
My daughter also got whooping cough, it was earlier this year, she was vaccinated. It was just horrible, she couldn't sleep and neither could I, lol. Finally got the Dr. to prescribe a cough syrup for her so she and I could get some sleep.

it was a real concern for him when he was younger. He had to have that vaccination multiple times before it "took." Fortunately he never got it.
Just this morning when I dropped my baby off at daycare there was a notice of a case of chickenpox in her class. So yes, it's still around (especially for the babies who are too young for the vaccine).
Yes..some kids still get those child-hood diseases.....and if they're contracted naturally, and not from the vaccine..they will leave the person with a life-long immunity...the vaccine only gives temporary immunity at best(sometimes not at all).
And if contracted naturally, instead of safely via the vaccination route, the disease can kill you....so the "lifelong immunity" can be fairly short....
Because these diseases have not been eradicated, there are outbreaks here and there. As more people are not vaccinating, there are more outbreaks. There is a new book out with stories of families who did not vaccinate and then had their life changed by the illnesses.

I suspect many people, such as the OP, who are having children now are in their 20's and 30's, and haven't seen vaccine-preventable disease up close and personal thanks to herd immunity.

There is a number of books out there about people who DID vaccinate, and then had their lives changed by illness...sometimes death.
