I am class mom for my son's first grade teacher. She is a wonderful teacher and great with the kids. She is getting married in June. The other class mom and I would like to throw a shower for her in class. Any suggestions on what the kids can make for her and what games we could play? I was thinking of asking each child to write a recipe and make a card? Any other ideas that don't involve collecting money. We really don't want to put that burden on the parents.
A shower really implies gifts, so parents will feel obligated to send something even if you don't ask them to. You should check with the school also and see if the shower would even be allowed, the schools my children have gone to have had very specific rules about what parties were allowed during the year.
Thanks for responding, I spoke with the assistant principal today and she said we can have a shower and serve food within state dietary guidelines but she didn't think asking for money was a good idea. She would rather the children make something. The other mom and I are going to buy a scrapbook and ask the children to contribuite something creative. We live in a very middle class area and some parents are miserable to deal with when asking for food or money to be sent in for a party.

"Miserable"?
Well if they didn't have a vote in whether such an activity should take place during school, I could see why.
I think when people are miserable it has more to do with being told what to do by someone else, when they had no input to start with.
"Miserable" has nothing to do with a shower for the teacher. Our first graders have SIX parties throughout the year. This a school decision not mine. Each parent is asked to contribute and it's always the same parents contributing each time. Miserable describes the parent that sent nothing in all year because "she was broke" and than had a spa birthday party for her daughter. As class mom I have had to dig deeper into my own pocket to make up.

You chose to dig deeper, you didn't have to. Six parties where no one wants to contribute seems a little excessive...perhaps it is time for the school to rethink how it does things.
Still though, whether it was a class mom decision or a school decision to have these parties...the spa birthday party mom doesn't get any input.
