Hello all,

My 5 month old DD was refusing to take a bottle or eat much.
She was eating below the amount the doc says she should be eating.
When we try to give her the bottle she will refuse by turning her head, pushing away the bottle or crying while we feed it to her (And I know she is hungry).

the Pediatrician said she was allergic to dairy(cows milk) so we switched to soy. That worked for a few weeks but now she is doing it again.

Has anyone else had this problem? If so, what was your solution??

Well, at one point - don't remember when but the Husband tried to speed things up by changing the nipple on the bottles. (My daughter was drinking mostly pumped breast milk). Anyway- I was using the nipples that came with the Advent bottles (I think they were "1"'s) and he bought some replacments that were "3"'s or "4"s. The milk came out ALOT faster, poor baby must have felt like she was being water-boarded.

Does she have teeth coming in? The bottle could be hurting her gums.

Good suggestions!

Have you started adding rice cereal to her diet yet? Maybe she is ready for something more solid. My son started eating rice cereal at four months (tiny amounts, in between breastfeeding). Ask your doc about introducing some pureed foods, starting with rice cereal mixed with formula. My son is 28 so I guess "rules" have changed but we were told to start introducing pureed foods and rice cereal sometime around six months . . .

Is it possible she has an ear infection? Sometimes the sucking motion, particularly when reclined, can hurt if baby has an ear infection so they refuse. One suggestion is to hold her in more of a sitting rather than reclining position while feeding. Other things I have tried include feeding milk via a dropper, spoon, or open cup, or freezing some in an ice cube tray and letting her suck on it in a mesh feeder like a popsickle. This can also help with teething.

You need to take her to the doctor and not wait on doing it.

If the regular formula, and the soy formula are causing problems there are others out there that are for more sensitive stomachs, when we were bottle feeding our child we had to give him a special one called alimentum by similac. Next time you go to see her doctor I would ask about this maybe being an option if both the dairy and soy milks are bothering her.

At first I would switch nipples, as suggested above. Or even bottles altogether - not all have the same nipple shape, maybe another shape would be better for your baby?
Please keep us posted.

Try changing bottles. But most importantly, discuss with your pediatrician and don't take advice here.
