Begin another PSA by me to parents of kids (or rant)

Had a friend come to me asking if SparkCityWorld.com - - Spark City World was ok for her 8 year old to be constantly visiting and chatting with other "kids" on.

I really wish people would stop making sites for young girls, adding chat rooms on them and then making it so strangers can sign up with no proof of who they are.

This website is even worse than instagram!..

This concludes tonights PSA

I responded back saying "if you are not 100% watching what is said in these chat rooms while your kid is in them, you're playing with fire"

The mom wrote back.

(name changed)

"You are right.. Asking my daughter more questions she said that Anna (her daughters friend) has a boyfriend on spark city. She said she tell people she lives in CA. I asked why she thought boys would be on spark city and she had no clue"

Well heres the thing about this...in anonymous forums (like this one) and chat rooms (like sparkcityworld) you can't prove who you are. This is a function of the internet and I don't see it going away. All this means is that it's something you need to parent and teach your kids about. Online gaming is the same way and as parents you just have to decide what you are comfortable with, but I sure don't blame the sites themself.

I agree with Ceece...though personally I don't like those sites at all.

I have no idea what that is, but I just clicked the link, and it seriously looks like the dumbest thing I've ever seen (and heard)

Are you you saying that people's identities cannot be determined? If someone wanted to figure out who I am and how to find me from my various unrelated handles, it would be a simple enough algorithm to write. I could probably do it, and I am not a particularly good programmer. Internet privacy is a myth. The only way to combat is not to play. Or, in my case, have a life too boring to bother seeking out.

I'm saying I could sign up for a site and claim to be a 12 year old girl and you wouldn't know any better.

What you say may be true but I don't see anyone doing it. And you STILL couldn't prove who actually is typing stuff on a forum. I could be me right now, or maybe my son is impersinating me, or maybe my friend is over using my computer...see? You will never know.

How easy is it? Genuinely curious here.
