Being a parent doesn't make unsolicited advice more welcome. You don't have to be a parent to give good parenting advice & just because you are a parent doesn't necessarily mean you always know what is best for other children.

I am a teacher. The vast majority of teachers know nothing about actual child development.

I agree.

I don't have children, but I still think I'm a better parent than some people out there who DO have kids.

Why?

Because kids annoy me, I have a short temper, and I'd yell at them. I'd yell at them a LOT. Plus, this world sucks and I have no hope for the future of this country. So I did my kids a solid by never giving birth to them in the first place. Trust me, they're better off. I'm an awesome parent.

Public schools have higher standards for teachers than private schools do, but let's not go off topic.

Some people who don't have kids may have still spent time raising kids that weren't theirs; themselves, their siblings, cousins, neighbors' kids, babysitting, stepchildren, nieces, nephews, God children, the list goes on and on. Just say something like "you'll be a great parent one day!" and leave it at that, walk away if you have to.

There you go with your assumptions again, father of Declan. Say, would you like me to paste links to your posts on the Goofball...er...Political forum so that a fair udgment can be made about the character and moralities of the participants in this debate?

Perhaps, you'd know better than me. But as a nurse, I had to take several child psych courses, plus we did a pediatric rotation which integrated the child psych into the coursework.

This is getting ridiculous. It doesn't matter how many children you've observed. It doesn't matter how many child-development classes you've taken. Like so many other things in life. Unless you live it, you don't really know it.

Yes, we were all children. That has nothing to do with being a parent... We were all students. Does that mean we all know how to teach? We've all been patients. Does that mean we know how to practice medicine?

Of course not. Wise parents will take advice, but from older/more experienced folks who've been there... and like another poster said, learn to shut out the rest.

Taking a couple undergrad course designed for teachers does not give a teacher much knowledge about child development or child psychology. First, classes for aspiring teachers are watered-down. Frankly, I was embarrassed to be given college credit for many of those courses because there was no rigor. It was a joke that someone else in an advanced chemistry course at the same college received the same credit I did for those courses. Second, education is rife with non-scientific theories about child psychology and development masquerading as science.

Some of Father of Declan's conclusions about the occupation are accurate, he just has no idea the causes because he's simply spoon-fed the conclusions by Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh without any curiosity in learning how these problems within the field develop.
