I love this! Twenty years ago, when my son and his friends were lazing around in the living room watching TV with their pants around their bums, my DH and I went into the bedroom and came walking out with our pants down around ours.
What's wrong with short shorts? Nearly every girl I know owns a pair.
Nothing really. The issue here is due to parental attempts to push modesty on their now college age daughter, when it's obvious she doesn't agree with them. Sort of funny when the father admits he goes out in public looking like a redneck, while trying to push the idea to his daughter that "People judge you for how you look".
If I see a good looking girl in short shorts I think nothing of it. Normal behavior!
If I see a man in short shorts I either think he is going to a gay bar or that he is a little crazy.
Lesson learned, move out of house, your dad is crazy.

They also don't let their daughters wear short skirts, or anything sleeveless. No tank tops or sundresses for these girls.
I just roll my eyes at these types of parents thinking that if their girls show even the tinest bit of skin then they are not being modest. And then to say he doesn't let his daughters wear those clothing items because he loves them? Geez, I never knew that my parents letting me wear tank tops (even one's with spaghetti straps ) meant they didn't love me as much.
And the daughter was 18? 18 is legally an adult, and a little too old to still be told by mom and dad how to dress. I could understand if it was a 13-14 year old who's body was changing, but 18? No.
As a parent, half of me loves the fact that he had the guts to make the point the way he did. The other half of me understands that every generation dresses in ways that offend our parents. We all did it, and the mode of dress for young ladies today isn't what it was even 10 years ago.
I remember taking my GF out in the 60's and her Father grabbed her at the door because he felt her mini skirt was too short ( I LOVED it ! ) But it was just the way kids were dressing at that time and if she would have worn the length skirt he felt was appropriate it would have been down to her ankles.
The standards of modesty each individual family chooses to enforce is up to them. I may not agree with it, but it's none of my business. The family in the OP is LDS, and the modesty standards as described are pretty common.
