The very first human born, Cain, killed his own brother. We are born bad. You don't have to teach a child to lie, it's in our nature. You have to teach them not to lie.

Apart from the mythological reference, I agree with you.

Not for the things that children are usually punished for - e.g. mouthing off, bunking off school etc. You don't whip an adult for being rude to you, do you?

I'm not responsible for building and protecting the character of other adults.

But do you think that a whipping would improve your character?

The possibility of the much worse adult consequences I alluded to do, on occasion, deter me from irresponsible conduct, as the possibility of a whipping did in my youth.

The reality is, you have to get a child's attention by the age of two, or they are much more difficult to teach.

So the reason you don't do certain things is because of fear of the punishment, not because you think its wrong to do those things? That sums up quite well one of the issues with using spanking as a means of discipline - it teaches them to merely avoid punishment rather than do right because it is right.

So you advocate spanking under the age of two? That's even worse (in my opinion, and probably the opinion of many others). It is perfectly possible to teach a child how to behave without physically punishing them. Smacking/spanking is illegal in my country yet the children aren't worse behaved than in countries that it is legal.

Are there no Finns that follow the Bible's teaching on child rearing?

If they do they keep it very quiet as if it was known then they would get a visit from child protection workers. Most Christian Finns I know, however, find it reprehensible to hit a child.
