Yes, I did, but it was always in the presence of other children, and I kept an eye on them from the house. It was pretty common for kids to play together out front in our quiet suburban neighborhood.

No. We live on a corner on a busy street and there are no kids around anyway. We have a backyard that he plays in by himself. (4.5) Doesn't it seem like kids are riding bicycles younger and younger these days? I think my friends and I were older than 5 when we learned how to ride.

We live in a cul-de-sac so it's easier for me to let them play out there without constant supervision. They also are allowed to go to their friend's house together. If they go through our backyard and cut through the neighbor's side yard and go down two houses they are there. If they go the long way it's down the cul-de-sac and to the left to the end of the street (though they don't have to cross the road). Their grandparents just moved in across the street from their friend's house so I have another set of eyes.

In the dark ages most of my neighborhood were riding two-wheelers by 5. I though my daughter was a bit behind when she couldn't quite get it at 5.5.

Absolutely. My kids were playing outside alone when they were 2 and 4 years old, respectively. Granted, we live in the boonies and have a fenced-in area.

Our "front yard" is uncomfortably close to the parking lot for our part of the homeowners' complex. When our children were that age we did have to keep an eye out for traffic.

Some children who play there these days are not careful.

My kids lived in the same town I grew up in while they were young. They roamed the block we were on, and the dead end behind us. I knew pretty much everybody in the neighborhood, and never worried about them.

I live in a pretty safe suburb, on a cul-de-sac full of retirees. Even so, I always watch my 9 and 4 year olds if they're playing in the yard. Just instinctive to me. I would be devastated if anyone abducted or hit my children.

Balance bikes seem to be a new thing and that gets the kids riding bikes pretty young. Wish I had got one for my kid, she uses training wheels which don't teach them how to ride properly. Oh well, lesson learnt for next time!
