Quiet time for at least one hour before bedtime: no tv, loud music, hectic family environment, etc. Getting kids all riled up and then sticking them in bed expecting them to drop off to sleep is not going to work.
We have a 3 minute sand timer, and our daughter craves extra cuddles. We give her the timer when we put her to bed. If she stays calm for 3 minutes when we're out of the room, we come back, give a hug and a thank you, and a few cuddles, and it really helps. The 3 minutes of time to be calm and stay in bed is enough to help her transition to sleep mode, but not too long to overwhelm her little mind.
