Exactly! If I were married and had kids, video games would be one thing that would not be allowed in my house. I can't think of any bigger wastes of time for kids than those things.
Hopefully you don't allow television in the house too! At least with videogames they are able to socialize and develop hand eye coordination. Television offers almost none of these benefits.
I watched people flunk out of college because they couldn't pull themselves away from their Super NES or Sega Genesis consoles long enough to go to class, and today's game systems have become 10 times more addictive. The struggle that parents face with today's video game systems is they have become so interactive that they're now woven into teenagers' social lives; it's a significant part of their social interactions with one another. I don't want one of those things in my house and I fear it's going to be a big fight with my kids once they're old enough to be interested in gaming and gaming consoles. Telling them "no" is almost today's equivalent of telling them they can't play with their friends at the park in their free time.

Actually, I would not subscribe to cable TV. The TV set would be used primarily as a video screen on the wall. I would be very restrictive on the content that I would allow to be viewed. But rather than electronic entertainment, I would have all my kids spending their free time practicing musical instruments. To me, music is FAR more important and beneficial than sports, video games, or television.

If you're telling your kids they have to engage in a specific activity in their free time, it's not really "free time" is it?
If you want your kids to hate music or at least hate creating music, go ahead and make them spend their so-called "free time" playing an instrument.

Well, I would make them hate sports. I would be constantly telling them how dangerous they are, and the risks of injury. I would show them pictures and videos of kids who have been injured playing sports, and put the fear in them. Video games wouldn't be an option because I wouldn't allow those in my home. So you've got two options left.. TV and music. If my kids want to be known for something, or have a useful talent, then it would have to be music.

Yeah, good luck with that whole "my kids are going to be what I want them to be rather than what they want to be" thing. It rarely works out that way.

Do your imaginary future kids a huge favor, and don't have them.

key word. 'would'..
It's so easy to be the perfect parent when you don't have kids. Let us know what happens when you have some.
Take away the game, don't let them play it, make them earn it back, whatever, but what does breaking it teach them besides that their parents are irrational?
Dad should have kept the system under lock and key. No gaming during school days and meals.
Damaging it is excessive and ignorant. That kid will end up hating his dad. Tough love dont always work, structure does. Many parents fall under this trap, using video games for baby sitting. Setting up a daily schedule , including chores, goes a long way.
