CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) -- Treffly Coyne was out of her car for just minutes and no more than 10 yards away from it.
But that was long enough, and far enough, to land her in court after a police officer spotted Coyne's sleeping 2-year-old daughter alone in the vehicle. Coyne had taken her two older daughters to pour $8.29 in coins into a Salvation Army kettle.

Anyone aware of how popular the parking lot at Wal-mart is for car theives?
If the car alarm was factory,I know how to get past it and I'm not a car theif. I'm sure everyone here has read about car jackings where the child is left in the car??
Its not worth the risk.
What would be your opinion if while the woman was up in front of the Wal-Mart if the car had been stolen? She would clearly have been at fault.

When I get gas..my kids get out and come inside with me...because you never know.
When I was a kid, my dad smoked in the truck and I stood up in the seat and rode in the back, too...with my two brothers.
1- let older kids go to donate alone and have some loon grab them and run,. mom is in car and cant get out fast enough to do anything... or...
2- leave sleeping kiddo in LOCKED car in EMERGENCY LOADING lane, within eyesight, heck, practically within reach since it was only 10 feet away...
ill take number two and hope that the police get back to attending to truly abused and neglected children. glad to know they can go vigilante on this, yet practically ignore children who are beaten, starved and neglected.

It was ten YARDS, not ten feet. WAY too far away to do anything should something go around.
There is a third option, don't go to Wal-Mart to put money in the pot if you can't take the baby out of the car with you.
My daughter is 11 and I don't leave her in the car when I get gas or anything else.
How far away was that little girl and her brother from their dining parents when she was abducted in Portugal?
This is why I do most of my errands after my wife comes home...because it is difficult to bring all 3 in with me...
I saw a mom leave her kid in the car when she went in a convenience store to get cigarettes...at least people don't leave the keys in the ignition and the car running like they used to in the good old days.
This mom took a chance and got busted so she has to pay the price...that's just the way it is...
