My son needs black lace-up dress shoes for a performance and I just don't know what to do anymore since there seems to be a big gap between youth and men's sizes. Youth size 7 is way too small and men's size 8 is way too wide. (Zappos has two pairs of shoes in men's 8 narrow which cost like $400) Women's 10 seems kind of ok (if he doesn't find out it's women's!) but I haven't found anything masculine enough for a reasonable price (below $60). Any ideas?

Have you tried JcPenney's? They have some decent shoes at reasonable prices. Not sure about sizes, but they carry a variety of styles.

Thanks for the suggestions - I've only looked at JCPenney website as I don't have one nearby but they don't seem to have men's shoes in narrow.

How are the Skechers - do they run narrow? I can find lots of shoes in men's 8, the problem is that they are twice as wide as my son's feet...

I know exactly what you mean - we finally outgrew this awkward stage. To make it worse, my son only wore the shoes for the two band performances a year and they often didn't fit by the spring concert!

Try Payless. Their men's sizes are as small as 6.5. That was always my "go-to" store for super small Men's.

Changing from kids sizes to adults doesn't go in straight numerical order....have you measured him to see what men's size he actually needs?

This chart from Payless Shoes has all sizes by inches

TARGET!!!! I just purchased my son a pair of black lace up dress shoes from there for like $16! He is only wearing them one time so I was not going to spend a lot of money on them. Also try Wal-Mart.

My DS13 has very narrow feet too. We have had good luck with the various shoe stores like DSW, Famous Footwear, etc. If all else fails, try Nordstrom. They originally started as a shoe store and carry a lot of unusual sizes. You could also use my old standby and get black athletic socks for him to wear, they are thicker and take up more room in the shoe .

If it is just for one event can you rent a pair or buy them at a discount store cheaper? I doubt anyone will notice for just one evening, as long as they look nice.

My son is in 6th grade, and I found his dress shoes for the past two years in a local consignment shop! Makes sense since most boys only wear them a handful of times.
