We spent a decent amount of money IMO on a bunkbed for our son, it was assembled for us, and thank God no one was ever injured. When we moved, the movers were taking apart the bunkbed and the pieces holding it together started to crumble.....
I'd say check Craigslist. I recently sold my hardwood bunk and day bed on there for a low price. The things were nearly 18 years old and still sturdy as rock.
A bit off topic, but it seems like they don't make beds like they used to anymore. :[
We paid about $300 for a nice oak set from Costco. They also split apart into twin beds if you find you have more room someday. The suggestion of a trundle bed is a great one too because then you don't have the height issues.
Much as I hate Ikea, we did get a good quality bunk bed thee at a low price. It has held up to a lot of abuse and is still in good shape. The biggest downside (other than having to enter the hell of an Ikea store) is that it came with like 2500 parts and one page of directions. (Step one: Assemble top bunk; Step two: Assemble bottom bunk; Step Three: connect the top and bottom bunks. )
We got one from an online store and couldn't be happier. It is made of hardwood, looks so expensive, but only cost us about $500, with free shipping. I think the store is called cymax.com. We are so happy with our purchase.
Thanks all for your help. We finally decided to reduce the budget and got one from IKEA. The whole set is easy to set up and sturdy. The only thing we don't like is its color, an natural dark brown oak. I think. We put the saved money into his Ameritrade coverdell educational fund.
