I think it depends on the situation and who you are talking to. I use kid(s) a lot of times, but there are times when it seems more appropriate to use child(ren).
I think you're right. Kids is informal---for talking to friends and family. Children is more formal---for talking to your boss or a perspective sales client, CEO's, etc.
saying Kid is kind of rude. It sounds like you don't have respect for the person your talking to or their son or daughter. Saying the word kid somehow sounds like you don't think their child is very important.
Doesn't bother me at all. I refer to my sons as my kids all the time. I don't get offended if someone else asks me how my "kids" are doing. Silly thing to be upset about, IMO.
I think "kid" is fine among friends or family, or in laid-back company, but perhaps it's too casual and less sophisticated than what your wife would like when speaking to those less known to you.
My wife says I should stop referring to offspring as a "kid" as some people find it offensive.
I think that is stupid. Who would get offended by you calling a child a kid? That is like me saying that you can call me a woman or girl, but if you call me a lady I am going to hate you.
Include my parents in that group that dislikes parents referring to their children as "kids". They are very outspoken about their disdain for that term.
Maybe it depends on how you use it. "How old is your kid?" doesn't sound quite right to me, but "How old are your kids?" sounds fine IMO. I refer to my own as "my kids" "the kids" all the time.
It does seem to have a different connotation for some reason. Never thought about it, but yeah, "how old is your kid?" sounds a little less appropriate than child or son or daughter. Normally, I would never think about it but in this context, I hear what your wife is saying.
