Some of my favorite cities are on this list: Reading, York, Harrisburg, Philly. Cities that I love for their history, architecture, and urban feel. These are also places that I don't feel uncomfortable traveling to or walking around. I wouldn't hesitate to live in one of these places, but obviously many people might. My opinion is all cities have good and bad areas.

You need to be careful with such statistics especially when comparing larger populations to smaller populations. For example a few years back a small town near me was listed in the top ten for high murder rates. 3 kids were shot by some punk from Philly all of whom died. Because of the small population the rate is high. I don't recall any murders for decades before that and certainly none since.

There is other variables here such as how effective the police force is, how crimes are handled etc. For example fist fights or petty robberies that may go unreported in the larger cities because of their frequency will always get reported in smaller towns.

Why did they use 2012 numbers and not 2013?

Philly's crime rates continue to drop, and actually has a lower crime and murder rate than Pittsburgh this year.

Oh but Philly is so bad right?!

Reporting of this nature isn't always the most current. I wouldn't take it personally.

look at the picture for chester, that is the main business district. there are definitely issues comparing larger and smaller places but chester comes out on top no matter what. unlike harrisburg, you can hardly even argue it has good bones anymore it's so far gone though there are some attractive pockers.

Article says they used FBI stats, 2013 only has preliminary data.

I'm not commenting on any of the specific areas listed because I'm not familiar with them. I'm just pointing out you have to be careful with such statistics. In a town of 5000 a one man crime spree over a year can have a dramatic affect on such stats. Chester looks horrible but some of those places listed look decent.

Both cities have improving crime rates, but Pittsburgh is still safer than Philadelphia.

I said THIS YEAR. Philadelphia has lower numbers than Pittsburgh so far this year and is on track to remain that way. The numbers you posted again, were 2012 numbers. The numbers in Philadelphia from last year (2013) dropped significantly from 2012. And I believe Philly might have had lower numbers than Pittsburgh last year. This year, the numbers are down again from 2013.

Did you even click the links that Speagles84 posted? The numbers that were posted are for 2013 and you were wrong. Rather than angry posting and not reading the information provided, you should actually read once in a while and provide informed responses. I am not sure why you believe everyone is against Philadelphia, but maybe someday you will calm down a little.
