I visited Presque Isla and Waldameer in Erie, PA and I must say it was very impressive. There is so much to do. It is a hidden gem. Erie, PA is an under rated destination. I don't think there is anything like it near the great lakes.

I think Pennsyvania as a whole is underrated, but that's just me.

I do too. Despite how large it is population wise, I think it gets a lot less attention than many other places which can be good and bad though.

Yes! It is a great place!

I frankly love that it is so unspoiled. Presque Isle isy favorite state park, but it's a close call with some other hidden gems (Ricketts Glen).

Pennsylvania's state park system is quite possibly the best thing about the entire state.

Agreed. Most people have very polarizing opinions about other large states like California, New York, Florida, and Texas, but then you hit the #5-#7 states in terms of population---Illinois, Pennsylvania, and Ohio---and most people just sort of shrug. Most people know nothing about Illinois outside of Chicago; most people are ambivalent towards Pennsylvania and consider Boston to be more historically-relevant to this country than Philadelphia; and most people just consider Ohio to be "flyover country". All three states have great amenities that are sorely under appreciated.

I grew up in Corry, PA, about 30-40 minutes southeast of Erie, and will always have the fondest memories of trips to the lake and Presque Isle in the summer. The isle is one of the most unique places in PA. And I will always prefer swimming in the lake over the ocean. No big waves, fresh water, no scary dangerous creatures, an almost negligible tide. Almost like a giant swimming pool.

I'm rather fond of Erie overall. I also am weird because the long harsh winters never once bothered me. I suppose they might once I get a bit older, but for now I love winter. (And believe me Erie winters are nothing compared to Corry. Most of the snow goes over Erie and dumps on Corry!) Presque Isle, Waldameer and Water World, Tinseltown (still the nicest movie theater complex I've been to outside of LARGE cities), restaurants like Brewerie, Molly Brannigan's etc. make me homesick thinking about it!

Hubby prefers fishing in Lake Erie. Serious steelheads. He also likes Walnut Creek.

The parks are by none the best thing about living in Pennsylvania. They are well maintained, well patrolled, and seemingly well funded. Some real gems in the state park system. It is hard to believe that such beautiful parks exist in a state with so much other dysfunction.
