salemand,

You can probably do a lot better for food than White’s. However; if you like old guns and a stuffed large alligators - that’s the place for you! I would really hate to recommend anyplace since it has been ten years since I used to make that run. Times change and owners change.

I did not mean Route 17 down in NC. You run I 95 all the way up to Fredericksburg VA and then get on Route 17 north. There is where those camera lights are that I mentioned. You take 17 north till you hit I 66 (17 runs west with 66 for five miles). Then you jump off on 17 north again and run that up to Route 50 west. You could just stay on I 66 west and you would run into I 81 - but 17 to 50 is ten miles shorter. Coming south on I 81 you catch Route 50 at (if I recall correctly) the 313 mile marker in VA. You would just take 50 east until you hit 17 south.

Big trucks got kicked off that last section of 17 to 50 because we upset the horses. At least that was what I was told. There is one pretty step hill for heavy trucks.

This is just another option you have depending on the weather. I think the mileage is about the same? Many times several of our trucks would leave Carlisle PA at the same time and take different routes. I think that using 77 was longer - but, it usually took about the same amount of time.

I 270 in MD and I 495 around Washington can cost you precious time - if you hit them wrong. That is why many of us opted for other routes. I 95 in NJ and NY can also cost even more time.

17 - 50 was the route I was talking about. It is the route I took when going to New Bern. It allowed me to by-pass the DC area and get back on 95 just outside of the traffic mess, call DC

I then take 95 down to 795, to 70 to New Bern.

Ok, so taking my new route to Parris Lisland, where are some good stops for food?

Good / Great Steak Sandwich?

Good / Great Desserts?

Good / Great regional dishes?

Hell, a bit out of the way is fine.

On a recent trip in NY, Vt, I found a small truck stop just outside of Plattsburg, NY. We were heading to Derby, VT and decided on the long / scenic way. We had just left the Lake George area.

We could have gone back into VT, and got on 91 N, but hey, we had just come that way from Maine, why not try a different route

The only bad things was it was raining the whole time. I say bad, because we would have stopped more to look around and such, but everything we had planned was outdoors

There is one dinner that used to serve pretty good food in Carlisle PA called the Middlesex Dinner. You would take PA Exit 52 and drive east (about a quarter mile) on Route 11. It is on your left. If you would go west on Route 11, there is a place called American Heroes on your right - that is about three and a quarter miles from your exit. I think that is the place that used to be called The Sandwich Man? I really loved all of their sandwiches and heroes. I would eat there all the time when I worked out of Carlisle. Maybe it is changed?

Carlisle does have many restaurants and truck stops to chose from.

NY is very scenic up by Lake George. If anybody wants a beautiful fall
foliage trip I would recommend running to upstate NY and crossing over the VT - I 87 to above Plattsburg, NY ( Route 314 east) and then over the Grand Isle Ferry to Route 2 east which will lead you to I 89 south. There are many places of interest to stop at.

I'll give them a try next time I'm down there (March for the birth of our 4th Grandchild).

Just to clarify, although it is east by the compass, to get to the Middlesex Diner you go in the direction signed US 11 North, New Kingstown.

The other direction is signed US 11 South, Middlesex, it goes from I-81 in the direction of the PA Turnpike/I-76. If you went that way you would pass the different establishment Country Club Diner within 1/4 mile off the exit (formerly Eat'n'Park), which is just ok in my book. This is also claimed to have the 2nd highest truck traffic of any road (presumably non-Interstate) in the USA, see FAQ (http://www.middlesextownship.com/Default.aspx?tabid=62 - broken link)

ki0eh,

Thanks for the clarification. It has been about nine years since I was down there. I don’t want to get anybody lost.
Do you know if the “Sandwich Man” is still down there or if it was replaced by American Heroes? The Sandwich Man used to make really great hot sandwiches.

There are also several Smörgåsbord style restaurants in the area - truckers sometimes favor quantity over quality! If I recall correctly; there were two east (north) in Silver Springs?
