It may or may not be.... but don't count on it. Don't expect the government to do for you what you should do for yourself. Ofcourse, there are exceptions, but that is generally a good idea.

There should have never been social security. I do for myself and don't rely on others but the government took it from me I would like it back unfortunately it may not happen for me.

I beleive Social Security is a good thing. Many people don't save enough for retirement and that SSI will help a lot. Not many people are rich or successful so it helps a lot. It helps you from being homeless when you're old and can't work anymore.

Uncle Sam is taking 4-6% of my salary to fund Social Security and I expect to get less out of it than I've put in. That's just plain dumb, but I don't have any alternative. I would love it if there was a way to opt-out of the system so I can take that 4-6% and manage it on my own. They can keep the money I've already paid into the system, I just don't want to be a part of it any longer and I'll sign a waiver that indemnify's them of any responsibility for me.

I'm 31 and will be retiring around the time it's projected that only 75% of my earned benefits will be paid out. I'm already fully funding my TSP and have separate IRA and Roth-IRA accounts as I don't expect much out of SS. Maybe it'll pay for the beers when I go fishing?

Why count on it? You are in control of your life, not the worthless government. Be wise and retire on your own. If it is there, great! It will cover your beer bill and maybe a few trips to the local strip club. But YOU must save for YOUR retirement.

This is something that I am teaching my kids too, because I doubt it will be there when I retire and I definitely doubt it will be there when they retire.. and if it is there?! GREAT! If not? Well, that's why I chose to be in control of my own future and not put it in the hands of idiots who only care about getting reelected every 2-4 years.

Like it or not, social security has now become the nation's main source of funds for retirement and is extremely popular. It is a fact that any politician who wants to get rid of it will risk his/her political life.

I read the entire article. The title is inflammatory in order to induce people to read the article, which contains no "secrets". I guess they wanted us to think it is some sort of shocking exposé, but everything in the article is already very well known for those of us who have been paying attention. Poster ChunkyMonkey is correct that doing away with Social Security would be political suicide, and that's the main reason why I expect it to still be there for anyone old enough to be posting here.

Edited to add: By the same token, the title of this thread is extremely misleading; there is nothing that Social Security "won't tell us". If you don't believe me just check the Social Security website (www.socialsecurity.gov) and/or the lastest Trustees' Report.

You're absolutely correct - any and all information you could want is on that site!

I agree. Personally, I don't think it will be around when I retire (I am 46). I resent that I put into it all of my years and then I won't have anything.

The government has no right saying "you can't retire on your own so we will take your money", and then snatch it away.
