If you feel like the relative is somebody you can trust who has a good reason to need the money, I wouldn't hesitate. There should be no blanket rule that nobody should ever "lend to family".

I was taught at an early age to borrow and pay back. My step-mother literally made me pay her back for a stamp. It was a lesson, not her needing the 30 cents or whatever it cost then.
An Aunt later on, said I expect to be paid back on the date promised WITHOUT having to ask I'm like yes I know I was already taught, no worries lol.
