We got a letter today telling us they found our payment from last february and since we have overpaid they will refund the money to us.

We are scratching our heads because we don't think we sent in any money last year. The previous year we had to make estimated payments, but they ended in 2011. We are going to check with our tax preparer to make sure.

We are just wondering if this is some type of a scam. We recently read that identity theives can steal your refund by filing ahead of you. So maybe this is the start of something not so great.

Anyone with thoughts on this?

There have been numerous reports about IRS scams. Usually you'll get a letter like that or an e-mail and then they want you to respond back with your SS ID number and then bam they got you and can request the IRS to send any refunds to them or they can use that ID for any number of other scams.
All you need to do is call your local IRS office and they can tell you immediately your refund status.

^^^ I agree! Don't give anyone any information except when YOU CALL the IRS directly. Smells like a scam!

We've gotten over-payment refunds....a check along with the explanation (letter)
If you have money coming, it will just be sent to you.
Hope you have not given out any information.

For the benefit of readers here, will you tell us whether or not this letter instructed you to do anything so that you would get this refund?

Call the taxpayer advocacy office in Maryland and have the notice # handy when you do. They can let you know what it is for and if it is legit.

Years ago, back when the only computers were big mainframes my parents filed there taxes and OWED money, but the IRS sent them a refund instead. The IRS did eventually catch there mistake and they had to pay back both the refund and what they owed.

Once I made a mistake (well that was our first in US and I didn't know a few things) and IRS refunded. They refunded the money first and I got a letter later explaining why we got the refund. I don't understand why they are sending a letter instead of refunding?

In post #4 I did ask more specifically about what the letter said but I guess we're going to have to just assume it was a scam
