back in 2006 money magazine asked us if we would accept a challenge from their pros to see if they could improve on my planning since i do it myself.
they wanted to do something different rather than the usual bad planning stories they do makeovers about.
we did the feature story with them and it was interesting. investment wise there wasn't much they could improve on. at the time i was thinking of self insuring for long term care and they faulted me for that. they were right and finally now we are going to look at getting a plan.
I interviewed three and picked one. Gave her a -B for her first year but sticking with her for now. She is managing around $1 mill but I have $2 mill coming to me when I retire in two years so this is a "practice run" for then.
Had the previous guy for 20 years but he was my age and I needed to go younger. My late father used to say you need your broker, doctor and dentist all younger than you so they can be with you to the end.
For me personally my net worth isn't significant enough in my opinion to require a financial advisor. If I hit the 2.5 Million mark I MIGHT consider it. However, I seriously doubt I would just let them have the reins to my finances. In my experience I can teach myself how to do what they do better then they do it. So most likely I will never use one.
at this stage of our lives i found having a good estate attorney more desireable than a financial planner. being that we are both in our 60's we made our money.
we met with an estate attorney 2 weeks ago and it was soooooooo worth it.

What's a typical going rate for a decent estate attorney (hourly rate, or lump sum)?
We are in 40s, and have all the right investment and insurance things in place, but we have been super lazy about wills/trusts/estate planning
Our situation is, roughly: 401K = 1M; other investment = 1M; 1 home paid, and rented: 0.6M; second home (living in it) mortgage: 0.7M; level term life with 12 years remaining worth 1.2M; 529: 150K. Other / money market/emergency fund / remodeling fund/whatever: about 50K. Two minor children, no relatives in US, so in case of simultaneous death of both spouses, children will need overseas guardians.
