30 million people could get share in bad currency conversion settlement
NEW YORK - Some 30 million people across the nation are receiving notices that they may be eligible for $25 or more from the settlement of a class action suit over foreign currency conversions on credit and debit cards.
The case alleged that card companies overcharged when converting foreign transactions into dollars and didn't disclose all fees. It looked at currency conversion fees — often up to 3 percent of the transaction value — on credit card and debit card as well as cards used to tap automated teller machines.
Wild, I just got that notice in the mail yesterday. I put it to the side to verify if it were legit or not. Apparently so, thanks!
Me, too. It did look legit and now I can see it here.
$25 is probably less than their nice profit in my case, but I'll go the easy way. It's not like I expected it. Hey, that'll be a first to get anything "on the bank"... Glad it was done. The foreign transaction fees were getting to be ridiculous. Wonder if that means the charges will be lower in the future...
I am going to take my settlement but really never had a beef with the CC companies that offered me great service and reasonable rates. I found their currency conversions much better than retail changes and much easier to use.
My experience was the CC's were a real advantage in Canada and Europe and most ot the time in Asia. Was a bit less convenient in South America, but still better than waiting in lines at local banks.
This is a nice settlement and my guess is it means more to the lawyers than anyone else.

I personally was talking about the ATM charges. I don't usually use credit cards abroad.
I got one and I haven't left the country in 30 years. I used my credit card once on an international order of about $40, so it's hard to see how they could owe me more than a few cents.
hmm, I guess I might be getting one since I spent some time in Ireland and Germany. Hopefully it doesn't get thrown away as junk mail.
