Homeless people will always use their money first on feeding addictions, because they know they will be given things they really need.

e.g. if you see homeless people outdoors waiting in line for, say, food, you will see people smoking. Their money was spent on tobacco because there is no free tobacco but there is free food. If it were up to me that would disqualify someone from free food.

I don't know about smoking disqualifying them, but I do think they should have to do some kind of work to get their free handouts.

If I'm not mistaken, I believe we are talking about average working families in this thread being able to live within their means. This right here tells me that you are not one. I own a home and support myself and two children working full time for a salary of $25K. Try that sometime, bet you couldn't make it. Also my brother is a pharmacist and makes in the 75-80 range. That is by no means a typical income.

Oh also that 50K you spent just renovating your kitchen and bathroom? That's about what I paid for my HOUSE. Again, not typical figures for average families today at all.

That's pretty typical actually, more typical than $25k/yr.
The average household income is $70,000 year. With a 20% down payment, $450k isn't out of reach. Median is lower, of course, around $60k/yr. At $60k, 450k home is probably out of reach unless you're talking someone who is cashing in equity from a first home or otherwise has a big chunk of cash.

$25k puts you at the 31st percentile. It's also within the realm of normal. Definitely lower income, however. It's certainly much more difficult to live within your means with less money, but $70k/yr is actually closer to median than $25k is.

Yes, you are probably right, but I have a feeling the $70K a year figure is typically based on TWO incomes, not just one. Am I right or wrong?

Well, basically you're paying for someone's cigarettes. Not a big fan of it but you can't really force people to live responsibly as a requirement to receive welfare, especially if you're talking the extreme basics like food.
Still, on a daily basis you'll see vans dropping off and picking up people at food banks to go and resell the stuff in the Tenderloin in San Francisco.

You got anything to support this clim?

USA QuickFacts from the US Census Bureau

Median is $53,000

And keep in mind, the billionaires drive this significantly up.

Billionaires have negligible effect on the median.

Why isn't the quote working properly?
