They are trying to make you as independent as possible while still giving you money.

You said that your parents " gave " you the money you'd " saved" so they were probably thinking that you were wasting the money they'd given you on the concert tickets when you could have been putting it to better use... Food, living expenses etc..... Just a thought.

Well that's a developement. An unemployed 28 year old may be they were hoping the money they gave combined with a job might give you a leg up to move out

Well that probably in part because you are unemployed but also doesn't really address how your parents could still have a problem with the expenditure

So I ended up buying one of those prepaid reloadable credit cards and bought the tickets myself.

But why would they say no, even though I am paying them back right then and there?
Possibly they want to encourage independence. I am not a mind reader.

Maybe your parents gave you the money so you could use it as a savings account to eventually become independent, or so you could pay for some of your basic expenses--shampoo, etc., or maybe so you could buy gifts for others this Christmas, and they thought that the amount of the tickets was a lot compared to how much money you had.

Or maybe their cards were just getting near the max they could borrow.

OP, why, at the age of 28, do you not have a job, not have a credit card, and still live with your parents?

Normally a basic credit card used on a site actually opens a line of credit for repeat purchases. However, if they created a safe card limiting the amount of the card and the expiration of the card the issue would be resolved.
