I've read a few articles on this over the years, stating the average return is something like 4-8% each year. I've compared my ROR with coworker's, but I understand not all 401K plans are created equally, so want to see how other's are doing with their respective plans.

Quick look at my statements as of 7/26 :
2017 ROR is 12.5%
1yr return: 21.8%
2 yr return: 22.1%

+12% ytd +36% trailing 12

Simply stating returns is kind of pointless though

I realize it doesn't show the entire picture, as what good is it to have a 40% return on a balance of $200.

More so than that it doesn't show concentration or risk involved in generating those returns

So to let you know RoR on my 401k. Beginning from 1988 to now I probably averaged 15% annually until 6 years ago when I began to dial back some of my investments to prepare for retirement. Now in retirement (1+year) my portfolio in the 401k is 5.5% over the last 12 months even while taking monthly payments.

Understood, and I guess I didn't factor in that fact when formulating my question.

why only a 401k return ? what about ira's and brokerage accounts too ? it is only part of a story if you refer to 401k's only .

old school myth was to put your interest bearing stuff in your 401k and equities in your brokerage account where you can write off losses and get special tax rates . so a 401k return would be quite low following that structure .

that is no longer a good way to do things but some still run on myth and old beliefs
