If ever any C-D thread so desperately deserved a beating-a-dead-horse icon it's this one.

I borrowed this. Think I'll save it for future use.

Another scenario

Man is self made millionaire and has 3 million is 60 and has 3 adult children before meeting 2nd wife. 2nd wife has no net worth. Man marries 2nd wife, fails to do a will. New wife also divorced with two adult kids In their 30s. Man has heart attack 1 year later and dies. Man had planned to do a will but unfortunately the grim reaper showed up early. 2nd wife gets the 3 million. 2nd wife dies 3 years later and leaves her 2 kids from previous marriage each $1,500,000.

The 3 adult children of the Man who made the 3 million don’t get a penny. Man has always told 3 kids in person they would each get several hundred thousand.

This CLEARLY is a crap situation.

That doesn't apply.

The man left no Will.

Your long-suffering MIL left a very clear one.

My grandmother died a very old woman, leaving 1/2 of her estate to one daughter, 1/2 to her son, and zero to the first born daughter, because that daughter had no heirs. The others had grand/great grandchildren. The one left with nothing was elderly and had MUCH more money than she could ever use.

I don't think it caused a stir. She did leave a heartwarming message to her in the Will.

It’s a scenario.

Clearly a crap situation.

Depends on the state. In my state, in that scenario, the widow gets 150K and then 50% of the rest, so more or less 1.5M. The man's 3 kids split the other 50%, so would each get 500K, or pretty much exactly what the father had always said. The stepkids would inherit their mom's money when she dies.

It varies by state though the 50% split is fairly common when the children of the decedent are not also the children of the surviving spouse.

But of course as already noted, completely irrelevant to your situation, where the decedent left a will with her specific wishes.

In any case you can keep beating a dead horse if ya want

My original scenario was unequal in reference to household/family

It is equal as it stands. Each daughter received the same amount ($43k). The rest of the estate was passed elsewhere. You can keep saying “error” until you turn blue, but you cannot change that truth.

You and your wife can choose to wallow in bitterness if you like, risking family ties, but your wife was NOT treated unfairly.

This is irrelevant. You’re tacitly assuming that the daughters (and only the daughters) had a right to the money. That is why you’re so insistent the division was “unfair.”

The grandkids’ money is nothing their mothers have any claim to. Grandma giving her grandkids money is no different from Grandma giving the money to a charity or to non-relatives.

Each daughter and their household did NOT receive an equal amount of the entire estate
