2) Pay off your credit card balance (keep your utilization ratio low)
3) Start paying your bills on time (if you don’t do it already)
To all that has been suggested, I'd add the advantage of making payments twice a month or even more often than that. It will keep the credit balance low.

Psychologically, that can help and can be better for budgeting, but FICO scores aren't real-time. Each credit line only reports once a month.
Varied trade accounts
such as revolving credit.
CC cards usually two major and one store brand.
No matter the max line of credit- use the 20% usage with pay in full each month.
Have a bank loan/car loan/personal that is healthy ( paid on time) and also has a decent history value.
Have utilities? yes even they can be included if you pay them diligently.
all this factors into sustaining or increasing scores.

New reporting rules by the three bureaus have virtually wiped judgments off of credit reports--never to be seen there again.
