No real goals, I retired to a cozy little house with a pool near Phoenix a dozen years ago. No sooner did that than an adult child moved home and made the place too small. Found a bigger place but someone offered me double what I paid for it two years later and I took off. From there an Apartment in California but the need for home ownership out weighed my happiness and I moved down here to Sierra Vista, 18 miles from Tombstone and less from Mexico. The weather is perfect here and as a Disabled Vet I can use the facilities at Fort Huachuca. The Fort is bustling and the economy here is too. My neighbor just sold for more than I paid 3 years ago. It's kind of remote, I'd like to be riding the trolley in San Francisco, but after 12 years of retirement I am still putting money away. I couldn't do that in California. I guess you could say I'm proud, and happy that I have been blessed with what I need even if it was not what i wanted.

My dad passed away a few months ago and I know my mom is glad we still live close. Evenings and weekends are the loneliest for her. We try to have her come to dinner during the week and then spend time with us every weekend.

Hopefully your dad has friends that know what he's going through and keep him busy.

You may be right about money not buying happiness but it sure does allow for more options. When you feel chained to a job because it pays the medical bills, mortgage and for food you realize the power money has.

I grew up with my parents always worrying about money. It is not a fun way to grow up. So when I think about money, I do not think about all the things I am going to buy, I think about the security of money.

Money buys freedom, which can lead to a much happier life. If you already have such freedom than more money is not going to do a thing.

Also, right now you are likely just very focused on the loss of your parent, etc so right now may not be the best time to evaluate the impact the extra money is going to have on your life long term.
