We are needing gerbil help! We had two we had gotten off of craiglist and they werent supposed to have kids. Go figure, a week later there are 6 babies. Anyways long story short, they are now 2 1/2 weeks old and the mom died. She escaped the cage and the dog got her. The babies were still nursing, so what do we do??? We know puppies you bottle feed them but . . . And I read wikipedia, and it said at 3 weeks we can mix milk and oats and they can try to start eating it but their eyes arent even fully open yet.

I don't know anything about gerbils, but I would do as much research online that you can. Good luck!

Take them to a vet. Even if you have to turn them over to them, they can care for them properly. At least they'll live.

I've bottled fed and hand fed many different species of animals. I can honestly say, a gerbil isn't one of them. I really can't think of anything else to offer. sorry.

Thank you for the replies. I did get them to the vet today. And he said that there isnt any reason at this point they cant eat the dry food. They were only still feeding off the mom because she was letting them. So he said that they should be just fine! Yay!

I've heard they wean by 3 to 4 wks, so 2 1/2 wks is a little young. I would supplement them by soaking millet (used in weaning birds) and letting them nibble some of that. Also, try giving them softer foods like cherios and canary seed. Good luck, and take some pics.

They are too young to eat dry food if their eyes are not even open. I think they will need to be bottle fed.
