While I was driving back from lunch to office(this is around 1 pm EST) on 18th Jan 09, I found a box turle almost on the right lane trying to cross the road, it was 3 lane road on both sides, by the time I saw him I had missed the crossing , so I took a U turn , went near him, parked my car alongside the road and by then the box turtle had crossed in the middle of the street, I was scared if something would happen as the cars were passing by over him and he quickly ducking in, But when I got a chance I picked him up and threw him on the grass and then picked him up (thank God he did not die from cars) and took home, showed him to my wife and then I called pets mart and they said best would be to leave him in the wild, The place where I found him is residential area, so not safe for him , so I went to a nearby park where it was safe in woods and had him go, it was lovely to see him on the grass, I touched him , pat him and prayed for his safety, I want to ask did I do right by leaving him in the wild? I did take some pics for memory .

For what it's worth, I think you did the right thing although admittedly I don't know much about turtles, he's prob. happier in the woods fending for himself as that's what he's used to rather than in someone's samll tank or a pet shop.

Def did the right thing getting him out of the road. As to where you put him, there's debate. Newest studies are showing that turtles know where to find food in their area. If you move them, they may or may not find a new food / water source.

Either way, what you did was save him from being hit by a car. Something way too few people are willing to do anymore, so thumbs up to you!

Hi, I went back to check on him yesterday where I had left him, but could not find, may be he moved in the woods, but there was a water source there too, a stream flowing, also its protected, all I did was to put him in safe place.

Yes, there were many cars moving on road, no one was taking stock of that soul who is trying alone to move on the road, while I did leave him in the woods, at home I was talking to my wife, see the grace of God, he is all alone and we all live with so much around us, is this not a miracle, that gives me inspiration to fight in life.

Ya did good getting him out of traffic. And a water source being near by is very good. Where there is water there is usually a good bit of easy to find food. My guess is he was very happy with where you put him and is off leading a very happy life right now. Maybe in a couple years there will be a couple clutches of little boxie hatchlings, thanks to you!

Whatever his odds are in the woods, they're much better odds than dodging cars.

We have a species of box turtle that lives around here and there's one particular one that cracks me up because he's got an attitude problem. We're in a very rural area and he's got hundreds, if not thousands, of acres to go be a turtle in. But noooo. This guy likes our "backyard". And he is most displeased with us when we remove him (for his own safety - a backyard with three curious dogs and three cats is not the place for him). When we pick him up, he doesn't retreat into his shell, instead he gives us the evil eye and mutters to himself about injustice.

thank you for those kind words, they are so much inspiration to me, I remember when I wasin 9th grade that is way back , in India, there was a lamb that was stuck on a roof top of a house and it was not finding its way down, there were lot of people standing there watching and thinking what to do , but I got to the top of the roof of the house while all were yelling its dangerous, because those roof tops were not very sturdy and there was no support, and I was very young too, may be 15, I caught hold of that lamb and pushed him down and he came down and ran, all he was afraid was of height, once I pushed him down , he was running, someone saw me risking myself and complained to my mother that I did that, so when I went home I got a slap on my face and my mother said what was the need to do that, I said I could not see that lamb stuck.

But once I was in train in India and I saw a wounded female goat and I could not do anything as it was lieing bleeing, because I was in running train. I felt bad for not able to help it though.

In India people used to mercilessly hold pigs or catch them in nets and then take their hairs off to sell, while catching they used to cry very badly , I used to go and actually argue with those buggers but what can I do alone.

I have been like that, if I see animal or anyone in distress, I try to help whatever way I can. and God Willing, I wish to start animal rescue or animal ambulance one day where by I can pick and treat animals who are wounded on roads in India. May be one day I will...
