Why are they trying to just act like it's NO BIGGIE when people are stilli being attacked by these teens for no reason every weekend?

Police-"We responded to the situation and it defintely wasn't a flash mob"

HUH???

I don't know, but it's frustrating.

I don't agree that police are acting like it's "no biggie". And I agree with the assessment that it probably wasn't a flash mob...those kids were already in the area, attending other events (4th of July celebration, Hispanic festival at Penns Landing) when they began to roam around other parts of the city, causing trouble. They weren't "summoned" through Facebook.

It IS disturbing that there seems to be trouble almost every weekend. We need the mounted police patrols...NOW.

Young black adults and teenagers have been gathering on South Street for many late summer night weekends. The cyberspace-generated "flash mobs" are a recent and unfortunate phenomenon.

I recall reading an article in on philly.com on Sunday that said the crowd basically dispersed peacefully when the cops did arrive. I also read another article about Bridget Foy's deciding to shut down for the (Saturday) night of the Philly Greek Weekend and giving their first floor over to the police while holding an employee party on the second floor. So going by that, it seems IMO that the police are prepared for the possibility of any issues and responding accordingly.

. . . for YEARS!

There are fights on South St. every night on summer weekends.

There's a difference between kids getting into arguments and fighting with each other and kids going on a rampage and punching passers-by.

There hasn't been more of it - just more talk of it. If it bleeds it leads.

I actually read an article about this happening on the Champs Elysees in Paris. Basically all the small businesses, the mom-and-pop cafes and bistros, were displaced by big name restaurants and clubs when the boulevard became the happening place to be. Now kids from the suburbs come down for the nightlife and start trouble. It's not unique to Philadelphia by any stretch of the imagination.
