Is not what it use to be You could hang out on South Street all night.I remember many Friday and Saturday nights hitting the shops ,bars and restaurants or just walking along meeting people. It`s just the beginning of June. You had someone murdered a few weeks ago. Now some nut shooting in a crowd and at cops over an argument. Thank God he did not hit anyone.

South Street has in large part been displaced (to varying extents) by Manayunk, University City, NoLibs, Fairmount, etc. My Mom told me back in the '90s that South Street has taken on a scuzzier air. The hip/young professional crowd is far more widely dispersed than it used to be

I'm not a big fan of South Street myself It is fine to go to sometimes, but I tend to stay away from there at night. A bit too much madness for my liking.

I would agree with this. In the 70's and 80's, South Street had a whole different vibe. More 'local' or organic for want of a better term . . . Music everywhere, freaks and stuff that makes places sort of eccentric and unique. In the 90's, it did take on a different vibe. Not a pleasant one if you remember it from previous decades. But, to me, that was what happened to Philly as a whole. In the 90's, it went into a freefall. When I've been forced to go back, Im amazed at the filth and decline, when most cities are gentrifying.

The 90's were a rough stretch for Philly. It's gotten better since then.

South Street's best days were definitely in the 80's and earlier, though. And it's never really come back, which is too bad, athough its surrounding areas have gotten MUCH better since the 90's.

South Street used to be very rough. When I went to college, at Philadelphia College of Art, in Sept. of '69, we were told, by the school, at orientation, to stay away from it. Sansom Street was where the boutiques, etc. were. The shift from Sansom to South happened after I graduated in '73.

The "in" places shift. South Street had a fairly long run.

There are some great places on South Street. Brauhaus Schmitz, South Street Souvlaki, Core de Roma and Jim's Steaks come immediately to mind. The street as a whole, though, was more interesting years ago. Also, I'm still not over the fact that they chopped down those nice shady trees on the 300 block.

South street does have some very good food... Leziz Turkish Cuisine has my favorite falafels ever. Everything there is quite delicious!
