My husband and I relocated from Arlington, VA to Philadelphia for work and are looking for suggestions on family friendly areas to buy a home with easy commutes to the Navy Yard. We have been looking on-line at Media, Swarthmore and Drexel Hill. We are in both professionals in our late thirties and hoping to start a family. We prefer a single family home with a yard and love a walking town. any suggestions or feedback would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I would recommend Media,Nether Providence and Swarthmore but property taxes can be prohibitive, so keep a watchful eye there.

West Chester is a walkable town and is well worth a look.

Also in Delaware County maybe checkout the Concordville,Glen Mills,Garnet Valley,Concord,Bethel,Chadds Ford area. This is a fairly easy commute to the Navy Yard and is a newer growing area which may be easier to transition into. These are more autocentric towns but very nice.

Good luck.

If you want to go into New Jersey (quick trip over the Walt Whitman Bridge) look at Collingswood, Haddonfield, Haddon Heights, Audubon, Westmont (Haddon Township); I would put all of these into the walkable category with town centers.

Media!

Look just outside the borough in Upper Providence Twp for a little more house for your money. Media is very walkable, very family friendly. We loved living there! The commute to the Navy Yard is not bad at all, I did it for a while before having kids.
