First off...

Germantown, Manayunk and Overbrook farms are all neighborhoods WITHIN the city of Philadelphia.

Second
Ambler, Media, West Chester and New Hope seem to be some of the favorites in the area.

Add Newtown and Yardley to your list.

What about Doylestown? I would rate that very high on the list.

Default you are all terrific for your replies

Looking for a safe, walkable town with very good schools to raise a grandchild..
I know little about the greater Philly area but want to get out of the quiet countryside
of VA. My house is for sale... and I cannot afford a $300K home and raise a child.
Safety & education are neck in neck as top priority.. still need shoes.

An area you might consider not on that list, for good schools, walkability and affordable housing options
could be the Glenside/Abington area.

But $300K would be about the price you would pay (if not more) for most of the nice safe towns that are listed above....

I would think there are places in Ardmore less than $300K that aren't bad. You just won't get one of the giant houses. If not Ardmore, Havertown (where I grew up) is within walking distance of Ardmore and pretty much safe. I'm sure there are lots of other areas that border these Main Line towns that are cheaper, but still safe and have good schools.
