Hi Philly!

I am possibly relocating to Philly and have an interview in Ivyland (out in Bucks County). I'm in my mid/late 20s, single, and don't know many people in the area.

I wanted to ask if you all have ideas on a good neighborhood to live in, as Ivyland is approx 45 mins northwest from the city proper, not considering traffic (though it is the reverse direction).

I'm trying to figure out if this would be a stressful setup, what with the commute, and being new to the area. A HUGE reason I'm relocating is to meet people and get involved (intramural sports teams, meetups, fun city stuff) and enjoy a big, fun area. I wonder if working in Ivyland will make that all very stressful or a lot of effort... ?

Any local advice on this would be awesome!!
Thanks guys

I'm guessing that most posters are going to have to google map that like I did - https://maps.google.com/maps?oe=utf-...g&ved=0CH0QtgM

I would suggest looking in Doylestown and seeing what you think of that. Doylestown is one of my favorite towns and a pretty good commute from Ivyland. They have rail service to Philly, a terrific downtown with shops, bars, etc and a great arts scene. It's not a city, but I think it would be great place to live. Thank you for posting the Google Map link, I should have thought of that. Doylestown looks adorable, I'll have to look into its young professionals/bar scene!

Hmmmm...what about Conshohocken (for living)? Commute to Ivyland would mostly be on 276, but WITHOUT traffic it's about 45 mins. Would this be a completely nightmare during rush hour? Or, what about Fairmount/Art Museum? I want to avoid living in a place that feels isolated/lacking young single people.

Forget Conshy. It's overrated, anyway. Doylestown is much nicer.

Any other suggestions, or even just thoughts about this? I don't know what traffic is typically like on area roads. I think Manyunk would be too far away too.

For your first year in this a new job and a new area, I would highly suggest living somewhere sort of close to where you will be working. Doylestown really is a pretty cool little town. The roads in and out of Ivyland are not going to be the best in bad weather - you are not going to want to be driving in traffic when it's snowing and blowing outside. I could be wrong though, maybe a more local person could add their two cents about commuting.

I agree with the references to Doylestown: close to your job, accessible by train to Philly, and within easy reach of New Hope, Newtown, et al.
You mentioned the job interview. I haven't had an interview in years, and don't know what's appropriate to discuss in the current twitchy human resources climate. That said, I think it would be a reasonable question for you to bring up in the interview. Ask which towns people at the company live in (and, if possible, get them to distinguish people with kids v. singles). This would be an especially easy question to ask if they take you to lunch (where, I suspect, the conversation would be a little looser).
