Assuming that restaurant job pays no more than $10/hr including tips, things will be tight at best. With those wages, your choice of housing and schools may be less than ideal. Odds are that you will have to figure out how to share a 1BR (if not a studio) with your child.

May we ask where you are living now? Are there other cities/areas you have considered?

on oklahoma! I dont like the weather here, it is flat, so always windy, of course tonado too. also snow storm , and they dont clean the snow here, so will be stuck inside, i remember the Christmas 2010, me and my kid were stuck in my apt( one bedroom too.) spent chrismas just two persons: cannt go outside. I dont know which city is a better choice? I have been to Greensboro, NC, seems cheap. but kind of wearied. I moved from a big city by the sea in China, so I just wonder if I can afford to live in the same big city here?

Philadelphia is cheaper than most cities but also more dangerous.

If you can cook Chinese food, you could make a decent living.

If you're in OK, I'd suggest some of the larger metros down the road in TX: Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston and San Antonio. (Not so much Austin if only because it is pretty expensive by TX standards.) The cost of living there shouldn't be much higher than in OK and the general job market has been relatively stable during the recession. Plus, with the rare exception of D/FW, you won't have to shovel any snow!

I don't know if this interests you or not, but Philadelphia has a very large, vibrant chinatown section that may appeal to you.
