Seriously, it was intended to go to Bustleton ave I believe and a few years ago, the extension project almost got off the ground.. But never did

I am not sure that it can be called a failure but I live in Abington township which is covered by by Septa train lines and every time I see one at a crossing I marvel that this huge, heavy, expensive machine is used to transport a relative handful of people per trip. It seems like over kill to me. Could they invent something smaller, lighter and cheaper to do the same thing?

Well maybe a bus on a dedicated path or even light rail. Is Patco light rail?

Really? Whenenver I took the R2-Warmister or R5-Ambler lines they were PACKED by the time we got to Abington.

Patco is a Heavy Rail line - more similar to BART or the DC Metro in type of rail car

It operates as a subway within Philadelphia

except that many of the commuter trains carry hundreds of people at once. the main problem is the FRA crash standards and rules that prevent light rail from operating alongside heavier rail vehicles and require trains to be much heavier because they use mass rather than energy management. think about if highways weren't allowed to be used by both tractor trailers and small passenger cars and if extra steel were required for passenger safety rather than crumple zones...that's what the fra is mandating in passenger trains.SEPTA just retired commuter rail cars from the 60's, buses last ten years.

Is that the West Trenton line? Those trains get crazy packed.
