We took a walk around the Whitman neighborhood today (on the east side of 4th) and thought it was all right. It's a lot further from the subway than I'd like but an easy enough bike to CC and close to the big box stores.

We're having a bit of hard time finding something. It seems by the time we see the house, evaluate the neighborhood and get ready to make an offer it goes under contract. It's happened about 4 times. It seems the Philly real estate market is heating up.
How about Fairmount or Northern Liberties?

It's too pricey. Looking to stay in low 200's for at least 1,000 sq ft, central air, and no condo fees.

Being a white man, I wouldn't dare try to move into a black or Hispanic neighborhood with "one of their women." (esp if she was hot) I believe it would be safer for a black guy moving into a white neighborhood with a white girl ...
Come on Larry they are looking in South Phila of 2013, not the once all white Kensington, Port Richmond type neighborhoods. The area's being mentioned in this thread are diversified. Heck some are calling East Passyunk the gayborhood south, and Northern Libs the gayborhood north. Can't get anymore diverse then that.

No, never out of the question! Except for our low budget with no condo fees might be an issue.

This.

I had someone yell something harassing at me from their car when I was walking around in my bf's neighborhood one evening. He lives in Bustleton.

Later he said he thought he recognized those people as they live a couple of blocks away; he said the whole family is racist.

I'm interested in the suggestions made in this thread too in case I have to move to the area.

Bustleton is very mixed, I wouldn't worry about it. What is your ethnicity?
