I mean, it is HuffPo. At least Buzzfeed doesn't pretend to purvey legitimate journalism.

The New York Times loves us.

In fact they selected Philly as No. 3 among its must see destinations in the world for 2015. That's not surprising considering that so many people commute to New York from Philly. It's considered the Big Apple's sixth borough.
Yep, that's what we want - approval and love from the Times because, after all, it's in New York, and New York is the center of .. wow, just about everything. But maybe we should seek their approval because it's the newspaper of our city because we're the Sixth Borough(!!) Why can't they hang that noose around Yonkers or somewhere else? Can anyone on C-D even begin to count the number of times Philly is compared to New York ("Philly's Times Square", "Philly's High Line", ad nauseum)? Do you see anyone on the C-D forum for NYC saying "I wish we had riverfront attractions like Philly" or "it's amazing how many miles of trails there are in Fairmount Park"?

Let Philly be Philly! We don't want this backhanded flattery of being an honorary borough!

Blame the New York Times. They started the whole thing a few years ago. Ugh...

I never knew anything about this sixth borough term. I started googling it. There was various articles mentioning it. Some Philadelphians actually call Philly as sixth borough.
What does the term suppose to be though? Term of endearment? Term of 'deprecation?'

I look at it as a backhanded compliment, but being around gay men all the time maybe I just look at everything as a secret insult. But its basically saying that Philly is really cool and has what it takes to be a part of the NYC family but were not cool enough to be recognized as our own unique city.. after all, to this day new york papers still refer to Philly as the cheese steak eating rocky balboa blue collar misfits.

I remember recently when Philly was awarded the 2016 DNC a reporter from NYC referred to Philly as a "rough and tumble town with people who love cheese steaks." I am not a violent person but I wanted to slap her. They forget to mention the fact that the 5th largest city in the country actually has some cultural and cosmopolitan offerings beyond cheese steaks and comparing us to some midwestern coal town.....

I always though North Jersey was the "sixth borough" anyways. Then again they probably don't like being called that either.
