Despite everyone calling them tourist traps, I think Pat’s and Geno’s destroy the typical corner pizza place steak so I would have no problem telling a tourist that you can get a decent steak there. By pizza place steak, I of course mean the ones made from the frozen 8 oz. steaks that are then chopped into oblivion (I like them of course but they are in a different category). Also, the size of the sandwich should play little role unless it messes up the cheese-meat-roll ratio. I find many people wanting to rate sandwiches higher simply because they are big or are a good value.

Here are some places I would recommend for tourists (in no order):

Steve’s (CC or NE)
Phillip’s
Pat’s
Geno’s
Campo’s
John’s Roast Pork
Tony Luke

Places I haven’t tried but want to:

Cleaver’s
Sonny’s
Dellasandro’s
Joe’s
Ishkabibble

I guess that's why this continue's to be one of the great debates in Philadelphia.....because three of the names on our first list I'd never recommend....not for a great cheesesteak, anyway.

Just had the worst cheese steak of my life this evening from Penn's Cafe on 49th and Baltimore. I couldn't even finish it since it was dry and the roll was too hard. It sucks when your last meal of the day is a bad one

The steak I had from Campo's Old City location was memorably bad.

Not a place you'd send tourists, but Overbrook Pizza has a solid cheesesteak. The Buffalo Chicken Cheesesteak is also really good.

Sonny's is my go-to but I've never had a bad CS from Campos.
