Ever been to Sweet Lucy's up by the prisons on State Road in the Northeast? Run by Carolina expats but most of the Q served there isn't Carolina-style. Best Q joint I've yet eaten at hereabouts. There are a few others I've heard people say good things about but have yet to try, and one I've tried that enjoys a local following that's totally undeserved. (Or perhaps it's just proof that some locals don't know what good Q is.)

You may have seen southbound_295 post somewhere on this board about an area of South Jersey that was awash in good little Q places. I think this Q hotspot has since vanished. Maybe if she checks in on this discussion, she can bring us both back up to speed. On the whole, this area remains a BBQ desert, no matter how many KCBS-sanctioned cookoffs there are.

Not surprised at all! I have never been a fan of Texas Style BBQ but I thought Percy Street was a bad version of Texas Style.

Fette Sau is the best BBQ I've had in Philly but it is expensive. I have heard some people don't like the method they use to smoke their meats but it tastes good to me. One problem I have is that it is missing that BBQ joint smell when you walk in. That is one thing Sweet Lucy's has going for it which, IMO, is the second best BBQ place in Philly. I have been twice. The first time I thought it was very good but the second time it seemed off. I will definitely give them another try. My BBQ meat of choice is brisket which they did not do a good job of but I thought the pulled pork was good. I guess this isn't surprising if they are from Carolina. I also thought the sides were quite good.

The sides at Sweet Lucy's are awesome, but Rib Rack has the better baby backs.

I'm guessing the owners of Eulogy also owned "Bierstube German Tavern" as that is closed too.

Baby backs?

There's only one Q joint I know of in Kansas City that serves those.

Fiorella's Jack Stack (which is in the pantheon of KC barbecue restaurants) was the first place I went upon return to my hometown after something close to 20 years' absence in 2014.

I said to my dining companion when we ate at their Crossroads location, "This is what happens when you dress barbecue up in a suit and tie and sit it down in front of a white tablecloth." (I did not mean that as a compliment. Jack Stack was good, but not great. The atmosphere was very classy, though. And should you ever find yourself in KC, you should go there just to order their barbecue baked beans, which are all that.)

Everywhere else, you order ribs, you get spare ribs - whole rack, long end or short end. Traditional or (occasionally) "St. Louis-style," which refers to how the ribs are cut and trimmed, not how they're prepared.

Have you ever tried The Rib Crib near Germantown and Duval? Some of the best ribs I've had in Philly.

No, and I've been meaning to - you're not the first person who's touted this place.

It still has a banner over its entrance touting a "Best of Philly" award it won from my employer several years back.

It has been closed for a little bit, with a sign in its window saying they plan to reopen soon. Unless that already happened. I go past it on the 23 everyday, but stopped paying attention after a while. Will try to keep an eye out tomorrow.

I used to play in a rock band, and that was one of the bars we played, along with J.C. Dobbs on South Street. I was in CC a few years ago for work, and stopped into the Khyber Pass. It looked exactly the same. Same dive bar!

I wouldn't say it's a 'dive.'
