I'm generally open and friendly to the locals when I'm in areas like this and I don't act like I'm out of place (I am white for the record) and they are typically the same way back. I actually met some really good and genuine people. Yes, it's an impoverished area, but it's getting better and most people that live in areas like that don't want anything more to do with the gangs etc as anybody else. I actually enjoyed my visit.

However, I didn't go back after dark. I probably would have, but was not sure I needed to, so I drove back home and will return if needed. I honestly don't think I would have a problem at night, but I would definitely take some more precautions at night. Although that area is probably much safer than many of the stupid places I go like dark river levees across from New Orleans or St Louis. I worry more when there is nobody at all around.
I wouldn't recommend going to the 41st street bridge at night time only during the day.

If there is no one around, no one can hurt you. I used to go on day long hikes in the woods. Never ran into another person. Mom, no one can rape me if they aren't there. That's a city and suburban thing mostly.

Seems very honest of you lol. I'm sure if the OP has been shooting in other questionable areas, he will be okay and make the correct choice.

I grew up in Delco, not too far from there, and went to Penn so I think I know the area. Yes, I don't live near there now, and try to avoid places like W. Philly, and N. Philly, but maybe they're getting better as I have avoided them for quite some time, and lived out of the area for many years. I drove through that area a few months ago, and it looked the same as I always remembered.

I am glad the OP had a good experience. My apologies if I was too alarmist.

I don't get a great sense of safety in that section either. I agree, okay during the day, and not so much at night. About a 5 min drive just shy north of there at Centennial District and the Please Touch museum, I would feel more okay although I have heard of a few cars having smashed windows or maybe even being broken in to.

How come this is the stock question here whenever somebody says an area is 'bad?' I know of a lot of horrible areas, but that doesn't make me 'fearful' and it doesn't make me want to become a shut-in.
It just makes me want to avoid those areas if possible.
