No question that lots of white people have been at the forefront wrt the effort to eliminate oppression against African-Americans going back to the abolitionists. Whether people accept it or not or those fighting for the Union knew it or not, the Civil War was about chattel slavery. It was ultimately about freeing black people from bondage. And there are the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments to the Constitution. Lots of white people involved those.

The mid-20 century Civil Rights movement is different in that blacks were the majority participants and activists.

Some examples are the Montgomery Bus Boycott(Rosa Parks), protest wrt de-segregating lunch counters, Selma March, March on Washington. Well, you know about these I'm sure.

There were a fair number of young white people who risked their lives(three of them were killed)trying to register blacks to vote in the south.

And, yes, there was always support from whites in the background.

This thread is such a stupid topic.

I purposely got out at city hall station last night just to see what was going on. It was beautiful out last night. City hall looked great. Chestnut was quite with the snow falling. The only person I talked to was a girl trying to sell her book. She said she quit her job in DC and moved to NYC to become a writer and was stopping through Philly on here way back home. Not exactly the expirence you guys make this area out to be.

To get back on track, has anyone seen the new Christmas light show at City hall?? if it wasn't so darn cold I'd go check it out.

Weirdly still photos of it look better than seeing it in person. Other than that I love Dilworth Park.

It's pretty cool! Check it out! Love the way the lights and colors reflect on the ornate architecture of our beautiful city hall.

I still have not seen the full Comcast building show, but I love going to light show at Strawbriges this time of year (still hard for me to call it Macy's lol). Brings back a lot of childhood memories. Wonder if they still have the Dickens Village.

Streetscapes change. I'm not sure what portion of Chestnut you're referring to, but I guarantee you'd have a very different experience around 3pm on a sunny weekday.

I'm certainly not saying that snow doesn't fall on it or that there's never a moment's peace...

Macy's in the Wanamaker Bldg got the Dicken's Village! Looks fine too.

I am disappointed but not sutprpised to the response I got (or rather didn’t get) when I shared that I behave pretty much as you do. I offered a personal apology for my use of an adverb that was found to be offensive. The apology was not acknowledged, let alone accepted.

I was also called to account for practicing the same caution as you when in the vicinity of the “clothespin kids.” All I explained is that I activate my radar when walking by them. I don’t avoid the area. I don’t feel a sense of fear. I don’t carry a gun. I simply keep my eyes and ears on alert should I sense the need to quickly move on. I find it disappointing for a poster (not you) to imply I need to account for this behavior, then ignore it when I do.

I am not sure what you are trying to imply exactly, but when I said I walked down chestnut from city hall station, I meant I walked down chestnut passed the Wendy's and west. Can you elaborate on what you mean by "but I guarantee you'd have a very different experience around 3pm on a sunny weekday."? I would probably put money down I walk down chestnut more frequently than you do so I am generally curious on your response. Are you implying there is a lot of crime or a high chance of being a victim of crime?
