hello everyone,

My GF and I are both from Philly, her from olney and me from Frankford. We have been living in DC for the past few years but we are now moving back home so she can attend Temple law. I've been reading posts on here for A while now but have never posted myself. It seems everyone who posts about moving to Philly is terrified of the crime there. Us, not so much. We both grew up there and understand As well as anyone the reality of the crime problem in Philly. But by the same token we know where to avoid and when, also how best to not make yourself a target. To sum it up, Philly doesn't scare us but we definately have a healthy respect for it. It is where we were raised. Sorry if I strayed off topic but that seems to be everyone's main concern. Anyways, since we haven't lived there for about two years i'd like to ask some advice on where we should look for apts. while we've been gone, places like northern liberties have blown up and I'm sure there's more. She's thinking manayunk while I'd prefer south Philly or if that's too far from temple, then something along the lines of NoLibs. Any suggestions? We've been paying about 1300 for our place in DC but since she won't be working her first year of school, we'll prob need somethin cheaper. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks

Sounds like you and your girlfriend are well-versed in urban reality, especially in Philly and find that the benefits outweigh the challenges. Good for you!

If you like Northern Liberties, consider Fishtown. About South Philly, someone here recently suggested that east of Broad Street is okay. You may find Manayunk overpriced for Philly, not to mention that a SEPTA commute would be awkward. Perhaps consider the Art Museum area as well. Some people get a little skittish around Poplar St but it might work to your favor in terms of affordable rent.

I would suggest either Washington Square West in center city or Bella Vista, which is a bit south of center city (but still walkable into center city). Both are convenient to the Broad Street subway for transportation to Temple. Check craigslist for apartments in both areas. If possible, I also suggest giving up your car and using PhillyCarShare.

I would shoot for Northern Liberties if you can swing it...really cool vibe there...like Manayunk 15 years ago...but the prices are going up. If not there, go with Manayunk...

I recently moved to Philly for the same purposes and LOVE living in South Philly. I live near Dickinson and Passyunk. The rent is very reasonable, the area seems very safe to me, there is a lot to do. She will have no problem getting to Temple law, the Temple law building is just off the broad line so as long as you live close to the subway you shouldn't have a problem. It is a better option, IMO, than northern liberties for Temple students because you only have to take one line.
