But to AshbyQuin's point, I'm paying the same in rent for a 2-room studio apartment in a converted Tudor Revival twin on Germantown's west side, and I wouldn't worry about her getting into trouble on the streets around me at night. There are those who consider this neighborhood dangerous on the whole, but I'd suggest those people haven't visited it in a while. Parts of it (including the part I moved out of) I would steer people away from, but much of Germantown's Westside is fine.
Most of the comments about danger in Philly neighborhood are actually fearmongering. LOL. In that neighborhood along Frankford, if you're not into the drug trade yourself, not out wandering around late at night, and inclined to just not engage the people in the drug trade themselves in any way, there isn't a real high threat of violent crime, but with the number of addicts in the vicinity, petty crimes like theft to get drug money is probably the biggest concern. Walking with large dogs will prevent that on your person, and being careful like always locking your apartment and car, never leaving anything valuable in plain view, and avoiding walking alone with ear buds are mandatory. The neighborhood certainly isn't great, but it's not the worst, either. Yes, you can walk a couple blocks towards Kensington Ave and you'll be in the heart of the opioid epidemic, but you can also walk not much further in the opposite direction down Frankford towards Fishtown, and you're in on of the nicest neighborhoods in the whole city.

@Newtownbucks/

Looking up that corner of Frankford and Clearfield on Streetview, there are a couple of fine specimens of the human race posted right there, entertaining a potential conversation…

TBF this statement applies to all neighborhoods. I could theoretically live on E & Allegheny without ever experiencing any criminal activity, theft, or robbery since I'm not involved in any illegal activity. However, just two blocks away in McPherson Square, people are getting high on tranq and fentanyl, litter is scattered everywhere, and drug dealers are making deals and getting shot up. Why would I choose to live in that environment despite not being a direct victim of crime?

OP's daughter is new to city life anyway. I'd strongly advise her to relocate to a better area instead of staying put where she'd constantly feel like she's living in a bubble since 3 blocks north she'd be in one of the roughest neighborhoods in the entire country. She would have a much better QOL and experience in the city if she takes MarketStEl and my suggestion for renting a studio in NW Philly or Manayunk which would be an urban paradise for a single 20-something-year-old.

I certainly don't disagree that those areas would be better for her. I was just addressing concerns over the neighborhood she's currently in specifically.

It's not just crime but in kensington you are going to be encountering people with issues, all sorts of anti-social behavior including noise pollution.

If she were paying say $500 per month then it's understandable but for $900 she could get somewhere better, with less homelessness issues.

I generally agree with you but these young people don't think like we do. I'm always shocked to hear where some of these people are moving to and what kind of rent they are paying. In some ways I suppose, they are leading edge of the very rough-and-tumble initial wave of gentrification.

Thanks, I'll mention this to her too. Last advice I passed along, she said she'd already been used to watching her step when she had to live in Camden, NJ for a time.

The CLIP truck is a good sign, however.

If she could handle Camden she can handle where she's at.

Just tell her to head south or east when she goes to hang out.

It's probably fine in the daytime.
